I’m impressed with how polished a publication The Prospector has become. I do have a concern from the latest issue. The Campus Comment piece regarding streaking really trivializes the act, which, realistically, is considered trivial in most people’s minds. We have had a couple occurrences in the last month or so. The problem comes when an offended person demands a crime report. The crime report must be taken. If the suspect’s identity is known, the D.A.’s office files charges if it is a prosecutable case. California law requires that anyone convicted of misdemeanor “indecent exposure” is automatically a registered sex offender for the duration of their life, which means registering with police or sheriff every birthday, or whenever changing address; also means being included in the Megan’s Law CD database. A close friend of mine from high school has been living with this stigma for the last forty years, and it’s very sad. I think it would be well if we could let our students know that terrible consequences can result from an act many consider harmless.
