The Yuba College Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Virginia Nicki Harrington as Yuba Community College District’s incoming Superintendent/President. The Board’s announcement came during a special meeting on Wednesday, November 21.Dr. Harrington will assume her position February 2, 2002, after Dr. Stephen M. Epler retires in January, having served the YCCD for seven years.Harrington, who will be paid $134,500 annually, was chosen by a selection committee from 22 candidates nationwide. Finalized by votes of the District Board of Trustees, Harrington’s appointment was not approved by everyone. Donna Evans, the student trustee, complained that there was not enough student involvement in the selection of Yuba’s incoming president.A student from Woodland was on the selection committee but not actively involved, Evans said, noting that students were never kept informed. The student trustee is the only board member not allowed to vote. However, George Nicholau, a board member, said Harrington “will prioritize the welfare of students.” Nicholau believes Harrington recognizes a need for cooperation from faculty, staff and administration to work for the good of the students.Harrington knew of the budget problems facing the Yuba College District before she applied, said Nicholau, who believes Harrington can solve the financial problems without sacrificing educational goals.Dr. Harrington has come to Yuba College from Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon, where she has served as President/CEO since 1997. From 1993-1997, Dr. Harrington served as Vice President of Academic Affairs and VP of Teaching and Learning at Moraine Park Technical College in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
