The Yuba College women’s soccer team, coming off last season’s playoff appearance, has gotten off to an incredible start of 7-1-2. Led by returning players Liz Jacobsen, Sara Parra, Erin Cunningham, Angel Kennedy, Annie Christensen, Myrna Guzman, Amy Merril, Wendy Payata and Donna Burnette. Coached by the multi tasked Jason Spain, who also coaches the Men’s soccer team, the women’s team has opened up to an impressive run that has surprised very few. “The girls are always ready to play,” said men’s soccer player Oliver Armstrong. “They have it in their mind that they can’t lose.” This fact wasn’t more evident then in their latest game against Fresno. Fresno got off to a 2-0 lead, but led by great goal keeping from Krystal Gularo and Erin Cunningham and the leadership of Sara Parra and Chrissy Grundrum, the team came back and surprised Fresno City with a 2-2 tie. “It didn’t surprise me that they came back,” said men’s player Patrick Silva. “They’re so confident about their abilities, the thought of losing probably didn’t’ even cross their minds.” The team is helped out incredibly by new recruits Chrissie Grundrum, Liz Walters, Raquel Ranlo, Stephanie Garcia, Kelly Huarte, Lorena Vasquez and Stephanie Vega. Head coach Jason Spain, was not available for comment, but most likely he is very pleased with the way his team has played so far this season. “Jason’s is very excited,” said Soccer consultant Aaron Daley. “He is not expecting anything less than a playoff birth at the end of the year.” After getting off to such a great start, the women’s soccer team has big hopes for the rest of the season. There is little doubt that the women’s team will make the playoffs the only question is how far they can go.
