The tennis season is rapidly coming to a close for the Yuba College men and women’s tennis team. Three qualifying tournaments and one regular tournament is left to decide which players will be attending the State meet on May 7-8.
The women’s team has accomplished great things this year. They finished 5-3 in the conference and went 7-4 in their overall tournaments.
The 49ers top woman player, Becky Keihn, had an outstanding year going 12-2 in the regular season. She is ranked No. 3 in the Norcal conference, and will be seeded No. 2 in this week’s Conference Tournament held at the Yuba City Racquet Club. Keihn and fellow teammate Jennie Miracle will be seeded No. 3 in the doubles match.
“Becky and Jennie will most likely be competing at the State meet,” said Coach Prager.
The men, on the other hand, weren’t quite as successful as the women due to new, inexperienced players and the loss of several top players from last year. The men’s team finished 1-6 in the conference, and went 1-8 in the overall season. Matt Rodrigues, Yuba’s top male player, will be seeded No. 9 in the Conference Tournament.
The players who reach the quarterfinals in the Conference Tournament will qualify to play in the Norcal Tournament on April 29. From Norcals, players will then qualify for the State meet, which is the athletes’ main goal.
Yuba’s next competition is on April 22-25, when they will be competing in the Ojai Tournament.
