The bye week for the Yuba College football squad could not have come at a better time. After going 1-5 in non-conference games, things began heating up as the 49ers won the last 2 conference games. A bowl game is within reaching distance, but injuries have plagued the 49ers.
Starting linebacker Michael Reed has been battling a knee injury, and many of the defensive backs, including Marcus J. Allen, have been beset by ankle injuries.
“The bye week allows our guys to get healthy,” Coach Hoal said. “To keep up with the competition, we have to stay fresh.”
The 49ers have lit up the scoreboard during the last 2 conference games, outscoring their opponents by at least 21 points.
Yuba College quarterback Trevor Stoehr hooked up with Wide Receiver Marcus T. Allen for 3 of Stoehr’s 4 touchdowns in the 49er’s first conference win over Contra Costa College Comets in a high scoring (56-34) game on October 15.
The Stoehr-Allen connection has been a familiar sight among the 49er’s offense this season, considering the 6’2” Allen is an easy target for Stoehr.
“Yeah I think it’s easy for Trevor to find me,” said Allen. “But we have a lot of weapons on offense.”
In the second conference game on October 22, Yuba College held Marin College to 7 points, while the Yuba offense got it done again, racking up 37 points.
The bye week allows the 49ers to recuperate, especially on a defense that has been battered with injuries. It also helps the 49ers practice with a chip on their shoulder. Coach Hoal believes the schemes he has seen from teams the 49ers have played in non-conference games are quite similar to the schemes the team will see in the next two conference games.
“The Good thing is a lot of the teams we played in non-conference games are similar to our conference opponents,” said Coach Hoal. “We have been preparing for our conference games using our experience with the teams we have played in our non-conference games. It really helps when the guys know what to expect.
The 49ers are now 2-0 in the Bay Valley Conference, with the next two conference games here at home.
