On September 9, Yuba College 49ers met a marginal defeat in the last quarter of a game against the West Valley College Vikings. The first home game of the season ended with a 32-31 victory to the Vikings, who marched the ball down field for 90 yards in eleven plays for the winning touchdown, with only 3:23 left on the clock.
Shamarr Prentice from West Valley made the first touchdown of the game. After 12 minutes into the game, the 49ers made their first touchdown. Then Yuba got a two-point conversion, making two more points for the team. West Valley attempted a field goal on their next possession but failed.
On Yuba’s next pos Three plays later, Stoehr hit Allen with 1-yard scoring toss that upped Yuba’s lead to 14-7.
West Valley came right back into the game, however, and moved the ball 62 yards in four plays.
Both teams scored again before the half. Yuba upped its lead to 20-17 after Beilen kicked the field goal. Then West Valley scored when Anthony Shobe’s punt was blocked and recovered in the end zone by Dwante Green of the Vikings.
Yuba recovered the ball later when Rasmussen recovered a fumble. Then Stoehr hit a leaping Allen with a scoring pass that put the 49ers in a 25-20 lead.
Later Stoehr and Allen hooked up again, this time on a 28-yard pass play for a touchdown and a 31-26 lead with 6 seconds left in the quarter.
West Valley attempted to score on its next possession but failed when Michael Torres intercepted a pass and returned it 15 yards to the 23. The 49ers failed to get a first down, however, and punted to the Vikings.
With 8:42 left in the game, West Valley took over at the 50. Two plays later Vikings played a 21-yard touchdown pass, giving them a 31-26 lead over the 49ers.
Yuba made a comeback when they took the kickoff all the way down to the 10-yard line. But they lost speed at the end, leaving the Vikings with a very narrow victory.
The game against West Valley was the first home game in the season. So far this season the 49ers stand 0-1.
