Reverse vending machines will open in Woodland shopping centers soon thanks to the Envipco Company. Unlike regular vending machines, which give you goodies for your money, these reverse machines give you money for used cans.
The machines accept containers directly from the consumer, account for each container processed and return a credit slip to the consumer, which can be redeemed in the store. Beverage industry studies have shown that reverse vending is less expensive than manual recycling, primarily because of labor and space savings. The machines also alleviate the sanitation problems associated with storing empty containers in open storage bins.
So far there are three reverse vending machines located in Woodland: at Nugget Market, Food 4 Less and True Value Hardware. The machines at Nugget Market and Food 4 Less are currently in a transition to new ownership and will be available by the end of December, the time set for the old owners to vacate the premises to make room for the new owners.
