The men’s basketball team had pie on their face after being defeated by the women’s basketball team in a cherry pie eating contest on February 1. The women’s basketball team did not look like the favorite to win early on since only two representatives, Rupi Gill and Mandeep Randhawa, showed up to compete in the event.
However, two Yuba College football players stepped up to join their team at the noon hour, helping them defeat the men’s basketball team.
Although the pie eating contest was the main event on February 1, students were also treated to the sounds of Red Flag Warning, a local rock band that filled the air with political anthems. The pie eating contest and rock music were part of the first of four “First Thursday Activities” to be held this semester, sponsored by the Campus Life office.
At noon on the first Thursday of every month, Campus Life will continue to host a special event for Yuba College students.
The idea for a First Thursday Event was initially the brain child of the Marysville Site Council last summer, but Elizabeth Bowman, the Campus Life Coordinator, and Miriam Root, the Public Information Director, came up with the idea of a pie eating contest. Last fall the men’s soccer team defeated the women’s soccer team in a pumpkin pie eating contest.
According to Bowman, Campus Life will sponsor a pie eating contest each semester, but not always between athletic teams.
“We will open up to clubs and departments, too,” Bowman said. Some college departments, according to Bowman, have already expressed interest in the next contest.
Students, too, seemed to enjoy the event. A small crowd of about 20 students gathered to cheer on the teams. “It’s just a great way to have fun,” Bowman said.
