For this first web log I am going to bring up a very big topic going around as of late, Plumas Street in Yuba City. As many know Plumas Street has been under reconstruction for some time now which was one of Yuba City’s most expensive, biggest and most expansive projects for some time. But even still a major problem has completely tosses aside, an important angle to businesses along Plumas Street, disabled person’s access. True, there are disabled parking spots behind certain businesses, but at times those spots are quite difficult to access, and there are still very few of them.
Another problem is the inaccessibility to the sidewalk itself. Ramps are only at the corners of the blocks, the edge of the sidewalk itself has two steps, basically preventing any chance of a disabled person simply going onto the sidewalk without assistance. These are ADA approved changes? It seems more likely that Plumas Street is barely complying with the ADA just to get by, and the idea of the ADA is to make disabled persons access better, as well as bring more awareness to people with disabilities. The blatant disregard for disabled access on Plumas Street goes against the whole point of the ADA.
