Members of the military presented Yuba College students with military career options during the hours of 10:00 through 1:00 on April 14, 2010. Representatives of the National Guard, Marines, Air Force, and Army each tried to recruit interested students with displays and handouts concerning enlistment information and benefits. Marine Sergeant Contreras stated that aspiring Marines must pass basic qualifications in order to begin to realize this dream. “We are an elite organization and anyone wanting to join must have the pride necessary to get in,” he said. “We don’t accept everyone.” A pull-up challenge was offered beside the Marine display and prizes were available to those capable of performing two pull-ups. National Guard Specialist Bohrisch said that his organization is effective at bringing young people to maturity. “We are really good at helping young adults make the transition from home to being responsible adults.” Staff Sergeant Bobby Thomas, a member of the Air Force, maintained that his organization offers the best technology and that participants are taught how to use it at no cost to them. “Education is available and I have friends who are getting their Associates and Bachelors in the Air Force,” he said. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Pavitt stated that the opportunities offered by his group are significant during the present economy. “We are the only branch who can guarantee your actual job within the military when you sign up,” said Pavitt. Pavitt pointed out that there are one hundred and fifty jobs available in the U.S. Army, and that this is relevant with regards to his particular branch. Students viewing the displays concerning each of the above branches expressed interest in these organizations and the benefits that are associated with them.
