Local baseball fans looked forward to the Yuba College 49ers battling the Feather River Golden Eagles Friday and Saturday at home, but heavy rain prevented the players from taking the field. However on Monday, with dark clouds hanging above, the two teams put on an amazing show of strategy, and a determination to win. Yuba College Coach Gloyd said, “We’re lucky we are playing today.”
Jerad Harvey, the right-handed pitcher for the Eagles, threw an impressive four inning no-hitter with seven strike-outs to lead the Yuba College 49ers 2-0. However, the 49ers rallied in the 5th when Joe Garcia hit a lead-off double. Several batters later, Dallas Walden hit a double to score Garcia, and the 49ers were only down by one.
Brennan Alejo remarked, “We play these guys tough.”
Both teams scored (3-2) in the 7th inning. Casey Yocum hit a single RBI to bring in Dayton Alexander for the Eagles, and Joe Garcia (sophomore) slammed a deep fly homerun over the left-field fence to score for the 49ers. The small crowd cheered.
The 49ers would tie it up (3-3) in the 8th. Brian Boss hit into right-field to lead off with a triple, and the single RBI by Anthony Stolo would score Boss.
In the 10th inning, the Eagles prevailed beating the 49ers 4-3
In the second game of the double-header, the Eagles scored early in the 2nd inning (1-0) when Steven Johnson made it around the bases with the help of a double by Grant Marcum. With an outstanding performance by Jake Johnson, the 6’6″ sophomore pitcher for the 49ers, this would be the Eagles only score of the game. Jake pitched six shut-out endings which led his team to a well-deserved win.
Dallas Walden proved his hitting skills once again in the 8th by hitting an RBI single to bring in Joe Garcia, and to tie the game 1-1. In the bottom of the 9th, a bunt by Brandon Rader would advance Alex Cervantes. The deep fly-ball hit by Anthony Stolo allowed Cervantes to take third, and he made it home after a wild pitch thrown by the Eagles’ closing pitcher, Dae Yank Kim. The 49ers win 2-1.
