Yuba College is at the minimum three games from yet another Bay Valley Conference championship, as they remained undefeated in conference play with a 92-78 win over visiting Mendocino Tuesday night.
The Niners (19-5, 8-0) were led by Julian Scott, who dropped 20 points on Mendocino (16-11, 9-1), while Spencer Butterfield contributed another 15, as five 49ers finshed the game in double figures. The 49ers started off hot and kept it going throughout the first half, including two separate 10 and 12 point scoring runs en-route to a 31 point lead at the end of the first half.
Mendocino started a comeback in the second half, something Yuba head coach Doug Cornelius knew was going to happen. “I knew there was going to be a letdown,” he said. “You can tell them anything you want at halftime but they’re looking at the scoreboard; you try and tell them you want a 0-0 game, but they’re not going to listen.”
Mendocino was helped by 21 points from Marcos DuBose, while Heyvis Jackson put in another 15 points against Yuba, who got into foul trouble in the second half, but were lucky Mendocino only made 12 of their 22 free throws in the second half.
Next on the schedule for Yuba is a game on Friday at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, before their final home game on February 9th against Solano College. Their final game of the season before the Bay Valley Conference Tournament is only two days after that, with a game in Napa against Napa Valley College.
