49ers’Anthony Stolo led off the bottom of the First inning with a hit down the Third base line for a stand-up single in the second Bay Valley Conference game on Saturday, March 5th. Brennan Alejo, the second baseman, sent the ball into center-field for a double, moving Stolo to Third base, and Stolo tagged up on a hit by Chris Stocker for the first score of the game at Gary Engelken field.
With the bases loaded, freshman Zak Morgan came up to the plate. The Mustang’s right-handed pitcher, Mitch Stroski, began his wind-up, threw the ball, and Morgan’s bat found the mark. “He threw me a fastball”, Morgan said, describing the pitch that he hit for a double to drive in three runs. AZ Sutton’s RBI single would score Morgan, and Yuba College led the Mustangs 0-5, at the end of the first.
Chris Stocker, the starting pitcher for the 49ers, shut-out the Mustangs for four innings before they scored in the top of the 5th. Anthony Nicolosi, hit by the pitch, took his base, and with a single by Sam Faleafine, he scored the first run for the Mustangs. The Mustangs would score again, and at the top of the Fifth inning, the score was 2-10.
Taylor Hickman, Ray Osuna, and Ivan Lamas all pitched against the Mustangs in the top of the Seventh inning, and Los Melanos seemed to be unstoppable, scoring six runs (8-11). Nick Finney, the first baseman, would score for the 49ers in the bottom of the Seventh inning, and the 49ers led by four runs (8-12).
In the Ninth inning, Los Melanos Mustangs with a series of hits put five more runs on the scoreboard, and took the lead (13-12). The stands were quiet as Yuba’s Jonathan Downer popped up an infield fly for the first out. The next batter was walked by Austin Wiggins, the closing pitcher, and the fans broke the silence, saying “C’mon 20…you can do it” when the local favorite, Zak Morgan, stepped to the plate. He doubled, and eventually scored the winning run to the fan’s delight.
