A recent opportunity to attend the Autumn Instrumental on October 27, 2011 at 7:30 pm to review the Yuba College Symphonic Band and the Yuba College Jazz Ensemble was a real treat. Arriving at the theatre, it was pleasing to see how full the seats were. The Symphonic Band was first to set up to start the concert. The lights lowered and an introduction of Mrs. Jennifer Aldridge, the Conductor, was announced. Checking the Program for the selection of songs, “Strike up the Band” by Gershwin was the first selection. Beautifully done! The nights other selections included in order “Second Suite for Military Band in F Major” (Guest Conductor, Skye Bole), “Solas Ane”, “The Circus King”, “Mekong” and “Armed Forces Salute”. The last two selections were in Honor of our Men and Women who are or have served in the Armed Forces. The Individual Members of Symphonic Band announced each Branch of the Armed Forces as the “Armed Forces Salute” played. What an Awesome first half of the concert.
The Yuba College Jazz Band set up after the Intermission. If the second half of the concert was as good as the first half, it should be quite Amazing! Again conducted by Mrs. Jennifer Aldridge, they starting off with “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” by Fred Rogers. The rest of the selections in order included “Old Days”, “How Long Has This Been Going On?” (Featuring Marylou Brown Solo/ Vocals), ” Basie-Straight Ahead”, “Somewhere Out There” (from An American Tail), and “Children of Sanchez”. Amazing Performance! It was a real honour to have attended this concert and wondered why more people haven’t attended before if they haven’t already. So all the folks who left at the intermission, they missed an excellent concert.
