Brandon Hurd, Yuba College graduate, part time employee at Two Chix Garden Supply of Marysville – who as a student helped start the campus garden and green house – says that when vegetables have ripened from the garden, students can consider them a healthy alternative to the snacks in the vending machines.
On a recent Friday afternoon students joined Hurd to relocate a donation of compost to raised beds to prepare the ground for new crops. Adding compost helps boost the plants growth and nutritional value while utilizing kitchen waste.
The compost, all 2 cubic yards of it, came from Recology, the local waste management company. And Two Chix garden supply has also donated to the effort by way of supplies and seeds.
While this was a somewhat informal meeting of the Green Futures Club, it won’t be the last as the nicer weather is bound to bring more folks outside to help with the ongoing project. The club welcomes new members who have an interest in gardening and implementing sustainable practices on campus.
If you would like to help out or have a donation of plants or supplies, you can contact Brandon by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Garden Club secretary Kaycee Scott at (530)701-9818 for more information.
