At Community Stadium in Eureka, Ca., the Yuba College 49ers men’s football team faced off against The College of the Redwoods Corsair. With their playoff hopes on the line, the 49ers established a solid running attack. Utilizing two excellent running backs who averaged over five yards per carry they controlled the line of scrimmage. Yuba was able to dominate time of possession with their ball control offense. The defense remained fresh and kept the Corsairs hemmed-in the entire game.
Tailback Juan Johnson re-established himself as one of the conferences best backs, gaining 123 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Unveiling a sorely needed short passing attack to the running back in the flat, the 49ers dominated on offense. Quarterback Zach Hutcheson managed the game well with a high percentage of completions and no interceptions. Jeremy Williams caught nine passes out of the backfield including two scores. He also led the team with 207 all purpose yards.
Yuba College held a commanding 34-13 lead at halftime and showed strong ability to close out a game, routing College of the Redwoods by a final score of 51-19. Although the Corsairs red zone offense was effective, they saw little scoring opportunities as the Yuba College defense limited the opponents time of possession to just 24:19. The loss was devastating for College of the Redwoods, dropping their conference record to (0-4) dashing any hopes of a playoff spot. The 49ers improved their record in conference play to (2-1) in this crucial contest for a playoff berth. Next week’s away game against Shasta College now takes on even greater importance.
With the Yuba College 49ers squarely in the playoff hunt, strong fan support would be greatly appreciated for this Saturday’s game against Shasta College. Please make the trip, if at all possible, to root for our beloved 49ers.
