The Calidanza Dance Company, a rising troupe of Mexican folk dancers, has been working to put themselves on the map of the arts for just over a year now. Yes, this dance company was only founded in 2013!
Based in Sacramento, Calidanza has high hopes to be recognized as Sacramento’s first professional Mexican folk dance, or Ballet Folklórico, dance company. Promoting Latino dance is part of that goal as Calidanza works to honor the diversity of Mexico’s culture and people.
However, Calidanza isn’t just performing traditional Mexican folk dance, they are fusing contemporary techniques with the traditional dances. Calidanza is representing the innovations made to traditional dances, finding newer ways to tell the stories of Mexico’s culture.
And it takes many hours of diligent practice to keep up Calidanza’s progress toward their goal. The company is still building on the choreography of each of their performances, not lowering their standards for anything other than exemplary. With Calidanza’s current busy times in May and September, perfecting their art will keep the troupe in the running as professionals. Although, as a result shows may sometimes be two to three months in between each other. But the drive to improve upon each performance for the sake of their professionalism and audiences is that meaningful to the company.
Growth within the current members needs to be continuous, but new talent is also something the Calidanza Dance Company is actively encouraging. With about twenty members currently in the troupe, Calidanza wants to welcome more dancers into the troupe.
No auditions are necessary when looking into joining Calidanza. People of all skill levels in dancing, from complete beginners, and some previous experience to professionals, should start by going to practices held at the company’s studio. Calidanza is encouraging people to really just dive right in. If the dance company isn’t the right fit, that’s fine, but how often is there a chance to be tutored in the art of Mexican folk dance?
Either way, Calidanza’s zeal for Mexican culture, and skillful choreographies is a shame to miss. To check out this rising company, go to Calidanza’s site calidanza.org for information including schedule, contact information, location, and more.
