A Requiem for Julian?

Teachers are the ones that pave the roads to our success and Dr. Betsy Julian has paved the path for many of her students.

It was during this semester that we all heard news of Dr. Julian's possible departure from the halls of Yuba College, and from there on several of her students felt that it was in their best interest if she stayed.

A young man named Joe came out of Beale Air force Base several years ago and applied for classes in the Yuba College Auto Department. Possessing only the basics in tools and knowledge and having no certification, Joe nevertheless wanted to earn a living working on cars.

The Earth Explorers Club of Yuba College gave their fellow students a special opportunity to celebrate the planet by putting on the College's Second Annual Earth Day Festivities. This year's event, held on April 22nd in the campus quad, featured multiple groups from the College, as well as individuals and businesses from the surrounding communities.

Woodland Controversy Continues

Tom Page, State Labor Representative for CSEA, maintains that students are performing the work of classified staff at Woodland Community College, and that department dean Ken Nather has admitted to this as well. "Teresa Dorantes-Basile and I met with Nather on March 17 to discuss students working in both the library and the tutoring center.

"American Idol" has finally cracked me. After years of being reluctantly, but oh-so-obsessively sucked into this crapfest of a show, it has effectively killed my spirit this time. The elimination of the only contestant who brings any sort of entertainment value to the show and has become somewhat of an enigma is unacceptable, and during a week promoting charity no less! America, when you see Tim Urban's helmet-like hair and his smile that probably radiates unicorns or something, I hope you hear the voices of several Idol fans screaming, "How dare you!"

So long, "Idol" of the past.

I arrived at Yuba sixteen years ago. It was not my first teaching job, but here I found my niche. I found colleagues who share my enthusiasm for the students whose lives we touch every day. And I found students who continue to impress and amaze me.

Sutter County: Get With It!

The Sutter County Board of Supervisors' recent split decision (3-2) to not allow Medical Marijuana Patients to get their ID card just goes to show that it remains a bastion of conservative politics. It also shows a rather blatant unwillingness to comply with State Law(s)-namely, California Health & Safety Code Section 11362.

What I Learned at Yuba College

As my time at Yuba College is drawing to an end, I've begun to think about how I feel about my experience here.

I'm sure in a few years I'll view the experience as a positive one, but right now, I feel tired. I feel tired of the hypocrisy, I feel tired of the lip service, and most importantly, I feel tired of not being able to trust people to do the right thing.

It is somewhat hard to say anything meaningful to students after 34 years of teaching. Saying something meaningful is of course what the Professor tries to do every day. I hope that a small bit of what I have imparted to students will be of use to them. It is interesting to contemplate that the professors that mentored me in college, worked in theatre in the 1920's and 30's.

Yuba College Baseball 2010 Recap

The 2010 season for the Yuba College baseball has been all over the place, going from triumphant wins to disastrous losses, and worse yet, a brawl that saw the team forfeit a game. Early season non-conference losses to Butte College, Santa Rosa College and Feather River College set the tone for the early portion of the season, several losses being of the excruciating 1-run variety.
