Yuba women start season short-handed and young

Even though spring is not here yet softball is. The Yuba College Softball team opened its season last weekend at the Stars and Stripes Tourney at the College of the Sequoias.
Yuba comes into the season short handed and young, with only eleven players on the roster. Head coach Stephanie Reynolds still feels that they can compete against anyone.
"I feel we have a good defense and a great offense this year,"said Reynolds.
Leading the way for Yuba are captains Taryn Schrekengost and Molly Short. Schrekengost, who is returning for a second year, will lead the way batting in the third spot and playing third base. Short, who is a playing freshman, leads the defense playing shortstop and sometimes third. Both Schrekengost and Short will be a huge part of the teams success this season.
Other names in the line up include sophomores Trisha Almond and Liz Mabray. Almond a second baseman and an utility outfielder is also the lead off hitter. "Trisha is more of a scrappy player. Whenever you need someone to get on base she does," says Reynolds. Mabray will be mostly calling games behind the plate at catcher. " Liz is more of the power type hitter, she likes to drive the ball," said Reynolds.
Yuba is in the Bay Valley Conference. This year the league is split in half. A Gold division and a Silver division. Yuba will be in the silver division which includes Napa, Contra Costa, Laney, Los Medanos, Consumnes and Mendocino.
" There is a lot of talent in this division even though this is a weaker division. I like our chances this year," said Reynolds.
In their first action this season, Yuba competed in the Stars and Stripes tourney over the weekend. Losing four and winning one against Cabrio College, Coach Reynolds still felt good.
" We had the early season jitters. In all but one game we gave up two or more runs in an inning each game. That killed us the whole tourney. I saw some things that were good and some that were bad. I was very pleased with our offense, we hit the ball well. On defense we had some troubles," said Reynolds.
The last game of the tourney Yuba played College of the Sequoias. They lost 11-1, but coach Reynolds said "This team is one of the best around. They can hit, run, catch and make key plays. I would predict they have a shot at a good playoff seed and possibly a ticket to the state tournament in Riverside, Ca. Overall I felt very pleased this weekend. We just need a little time to work out some nuts and bolts."
Next week Yuba travels to Feather River College and Santa Rosa Junior College each for a one game set, travels to Sac City for a double-header to end the week.
