When the Yuba College tennis program was under the chopping block, 49ers tennis coach Josh Prager stepped in and helped save the program.

Coach Prager used different types of fundraisers to raise money to support the tennis program. This has allowed Yuba College to have a tennis team - a very good tennis team.

The 49ers men's team is led by Anton Talle along with Marysville High graduate John Lester. Other star players for the team are Matt Rogrigues, David Xiong, Neil Hilleary and Blake Jones. The men's team has a conference record of 4-2 at this point in the season.

"This is the best men's team we've had in years," said coach Prager.
The women's team features Becky Kiehn, Jennie Miracle and Cindy Lopez. The women's team is standing well with a conference record of 3-3.

"Becky's the best women's player we've had in, gosh, at least 10 years," said Prager.

Both the 49ers men's and women's team will be hosting the Best in State Tournament on May 1-3.

Coach Prager said he expects to see Kiehn to play in the tournament for the women's side, while Talle, Lester and Rodrigues are hopefuls for the men's side. Also for the women's team, Miracle could make the tournament.

In the first conference match of the season, the 49ers suffered losses on both the men's and women's side.

The women dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 match to American River College. Miracle won her singles match, 6-1, 6-1, while Shauna Reynoso won her match 6-4, 6-2. Kiehn and Donna Buttacavoli teamed up for a win in doubles play, 6-4, 6-1, while Lopez and Amy Vallier took their doubles match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The men were swept in its match to American River, 9-0.

This years team for both men's and women's side seem to struggle at times, but when the players' game is on, nothing seems to be able to stop them from winning.

Coach Prager has done an excellent job in building the tennis program and he has managed to get great players. This team can only improve throughout the year and they should compete at a high level against the other Bay Valley Conference opponents.
