MTV star: this school ain't so bad

(U-WIRE) BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Kevin Sheehan, now a freshman at BU, collapses in a melodramatic stupor during his nationally broadcast campus tour.
Waiting patiently at a small table under an umbrella in the Newing Dining Hall, Kevin Sheehan is wary of how much more of himself he's about to expose.

He extends his hand, introduces himself with a smile, and laughs at a quip about the weather. He's polite and affable, and keeps steady eye contact. Already in only his third week of college, Kevin is a veteran of the media meet-and-greet.

Since appearing on the MTV documentary series, True Life: I'm a High School Senior, which chronicled his heartbreaking rejection from his top-choice school Notre Dame, his reluctant acceptance to Binghamton University, the Long Beach High School 2003 senior prom, and the addition of a fighting Irish tattoo to his right bicep, Kevin has done interviews with local television news stations and Newsday.

"I'm iffy about when I do stuff, because sometimes people turn you out to be an asshole," he says.

He's thinking of majoring in politics, philosophy and law, and hasn't decided yet if he wants to pursue a career in politics.

And yes, he says, he does get recognized.

"It's not a good popular," he says.

For Kevin, the newly gained celebrity is a double-edged sword.

"I was at Cheers one night. Two guys came up to me and they did the Notre Dame theme song, and then they were like, 'you're an asshole.'"

Such are the pitfalls of appearing in a nationally syndicated series; whether he's justifying why he stole dinner rolls for his prom date, or how much he really does like Binghamton, Kevin finds that he's always explaining himself.

"I meet a lot of people that way," he says. "Guys come up to me and they're like, 'Dude you're the man, you were on TV!'"

He says he usually gets noticed on the buses that run from campus to downtown Binghamton on Fridays and Saturdays.
