Students looking for a parking spot in Yuba College's west lot cannot help but notice some serious construction behind the distance education building. What will soon be a new Adaptive Physical Education building for disabled students is scheduled for completion during Fall 2004, weather permitting.

The one million dollar project has been on the back burner since 1994, according to Vice President of Business Services Mike Dencavage.

According to Dencavage, "The 240-day bid was finally made in December of 2003."

"Prop. 47 provided the funding," continued Dencavage. "It was a long time in coming."

While faculty and students await construction of the P.E. building, they must surrender 20 parking spaces now being used by the construction team. Some disabled spots are also being used temporarily during construction.

The DSPS Resource Center, located in Building 1800, just off the west parking lot is designed to equalize vocational and educational opportunities for students with physical limitations and/or learning disabilities. The Center provides study aids and tutoring services. Special parking is provided for those students.

The new P.E. facility will provide students with disabilities a Hydro Room, complete with whirlpool tubs; a Spa Room that includes a seat lift into a swimming spa; an Assessment Room; men's and women's restrooms; a large office; a janitorial closet; and a lobby.

DSPS Technician Denise Mc Lain said, "It's something this campus has needed for a long time."

DSPS students should register early at (530) 741-6796.
